The most intriguing story spinning through the transfer rumour mill today, is the one about Didier Drogba heading for FC Barcelona; the club he played a key role in knocking out of this year’s Champions League semi-final when still a Chelsea player.
It is being widely reported in the Spanish media that Drogba will meet representatives of Barcelona in Spain tomorrow afternoon.
Although the Ivorian striker only recently put pen to paper on a new deal with Chinese club Shanghai Shenua, it’s been suggested that he has a release clause in it which means he wouldn’t be made to honour it, and would instead be allowed to leave on a free-transfer should Barcelona decide they require his services.
It seems unlikely though, that the Catalan club would be able to compete with the 2 ½ year, £200,000 plus a week deal the Shanghai side are reported to have offered the 34 year old veteran forward.
And Drogba’s representative – PR Sports – has been quick in its response to quash these rumours, tweeting earlier today: “Drogba to Barca story complete nonsense. As we told you he joins Shanghai in July.”
Shenua Shanghai owner – Zhu Jun said: “We have been wanting to sign Didier for a while, and are very happy that it has finally happened.”
So it would appear, despite the rumours, that no one’s going to let the Drog out of his newly signed contract anytime soon.
