We all thought that Harry Redknapp was the only real candidate to replace Fabio Capello as England manager this summer, and so it comes as a huge surprise that the FA have only one man in mind for the job, Roy Hodgson!
As the FA steps up their pursuit of the new manager, Roy Hodgson will have a formal interview for the job today after West Brom granted the FA to speak to their head coach.
In a statement released on Sunday evening, David Bernstein at the FA said:
“I’m grateful to Jeremy (West Brom Chairman) and all at West Bromwich Albion for their co-operation in allowing us to approach Roy, who I have since spoken with.
“Roy is the only manager we have approached and we remain on course to make an appointment within the timescale we set-out soon after Fabio Capello’s departure.
“Further conversations will now take place with Roy and my Club England colleagues before any further announcements can be made.”
Despite Harry Redknapp being the fans and players favourite for the role, the FA have seemingly overlooked the Spurs manager as they have yet to make an official approach. Maybe this is down to the fact that Spurs still have a lot to play for in the remainder of the season, or perhaps that Hodgson is out of contract in June which would make the whole process a lot cheaper, smoother and quicker with the Euro’s just five weeks away!
It certainly is surprising news! What are your thoughts on Hodgson as England manager and how will the England team under his guidance at Euro 2012?
